Corset Cameo

wpid-20140107_153326.jpgI used an image of vintage tattoo flash for my screen prints a while ago, I started reusing it for inspiration.

A few weeks ago I used it to do some appliqué on my circle skirt. Circle skirts are traditionally appliqué with poodle hence why there often called poodle skirts. I didn’t really fancy sewing a poodle onto my skirt, so I appliqué the design I used for the screen printing, Unfortunately I didn’t photograph it until after I had worn it out on my birthday, it defiantly lost  some of its definition in the wash.

Since I been doing leather work I have imagined using this image for a cameo corset. I love the style of Louise Black cameo corsets but I want a front Busk. So I think this will mean using a front panel with two busk which is a style of corset I have seen used a lot by harlots and angels. I will have to adapt an existing pattern it’s just a case of deciding which one now.

I’m really pleased with this Leather tooling, even though it very clear that I have more experience carving flower than faces! Hopefully I will be able to use it on the finished corset. Just waiting on all of my dyes to turn up so I can start finishing it properly.

and all the rest, a friend who’s dressed in leather

I have been experimenting with leather work. It’s something I wanted to try for  while, this Christmas my parents kindly got me a beginners leather work kit. I’m still eating turkey sandwiches and I have made everything possible in the kit, I’ve ordered more supply on eBay and waiting with bated breath for them to arrive, holiday post sucks! At the moment I foresee Leather cos-play armour but once I am more used manipulating Leather a corset is in order. I can see a corset with a large carved leather cameo on the horizon.

Just Glue Some Gears On It (And Call It Steampunk)

I know there not Steampunk but I have been creatively inactive for a little while so I just wanted to do something silly and fun, in steps some watch parts from eBay  and a glue gun!

I didn’t take much notice of the scaling of the watch part when I brought them so they were too small create a design, they are used best for adding texture. I’ve ordered some larger cog which I’m going to use on the side of the boot for the main decoration. I will post more picture with I add the big cogs.

I enjoyed making something again, Hopefully there will be some projects soon.Boot Toe

Screen Printing Workshop

So I attended a screen printing workshop at the London Textiles Studio today, it was amazing fun it felt great to have a Squeegee back in my hand, another thing that has been missing for about ten years. I’m really pleased with the results and about im about to spend a  few hours internet shopping to get my own kit.

The Design is inspired from some vintage tattoo flash I’ve been experimenting with.

Scared of Tweed

So Despite having a fabulous collection of vintage patterns and  fabric for many years, I never done anything with them. If I didn’t already own them it’s the kinda stuff I would spend many hours coveting on Ebay and wishing I had.

All vintage stuff has a history, but the history to these is personal to me as I inherited the fabric and patterns from my Nan. There more of an attachment than some pattern you pick up at your local vintage market. When I open up the packet and it’s already been used I get a funny feeling as I know me and my nan have both made the top be it decades apart. It’s the same with the fabric, there some green felt I was looking at once and my dad  told me he used it to line a wooden box he made in high school, when he showed me the box I knew well, it had been setting on the window ledge in my parent house my whole life.

So given the depth of feeling I project onto these objects its made me scared to use them. Once I bit the Bullet and decided I was going to make something from these fabrics. So I started making a corset, A corset I now know as ”The Corset of Doom’ well that wasn’t the best of foray into using my vintage collection. I hit a bump in the road, got scared I had ruined this beautiful irreplaceable fabric and the project languished in my stash for nearly a decade.

So now that I’ve completed my corset of doom I think it high time I made another attempt at my vintage stash. So vintage clothes don’t really lend themselves to the kind of stuff I wear at the weekend, but I could imagine wearing some vintage office attire. One of my fabrics I been too scared to use is the brown and green tweed pictured above.  I’m hoping it wont take quite as long as the corset of doom this time.

So I decided to use the trousers from 'Style Patterns 4254' for the tweed. For green fabric above I'm using 'woman's weekly B564' im doing the 'view A' blouse .

Karen Prell

Who is Karen Prell? I didn’t know until yesterday. She was the puppeteer for the blue worm and quite a few of the other character in the labyrinth. She also was the puppeteer and voice for Red from Fraggle Rock.  And she still busy doing amazing things now, she animated Wheatley from Portal 2. So she has had a hand in my favourite film and my favourite video game! I can’t believe I wasnt aware of her until now!

My labyrinth Worm has had a really positive response, so really want to knit another softie / plushie now.  I had a few idea and im finding it difficult to decide which to do first. So I have narrowed it down to three ideas:

Portal: Wheatley

Plants Vs Zombies: Pea Shooter

Labyrinth: Wiseman and the hat

I think I’m going to go for Wheatley first, I’m feeling the Karen Prell vibe, I want to knit another one the character she has breathed life into.

P.S.

IMDB is a wonderful thing, I also enjoyed finding out that  Timothy Bateson ( RIP)  who voiced the Blue Labyrinth Worm also voiced Kreacher in the Harry Potter movies.

Labyrinth Worm

I have been procrastinating on my chemise for quite a while now, basically I can’t decide if I should adapt the pattern and turn into an under corset dress or if I should make a separate skirt for the outfit? I am quite hesitant to put the final stitches on the chemise until I have decided what im going to do.

So until I make any  decision I’ve had to distract myself somehow, whilst clicking my way through Sunday I found the labyrinth worm plushie which I instantly wanted! My inner knitter reminded me that I love making knitted toys and this would be amazing fun! my last knitted toy adventure worked out quite well for me so lets hope this is a success too!
